Grave New World is a series of works dealing with the topics of human extinction and the forces behind it.

The end of civilisation and the world as we know it is something I think about often. Some of the specific topics I explore are war and conflict, the rise of AI, police brutality, and nuclear weapons. When I created this work, I wanted it to rattle the viewer in an uneasy way—similar to the experience of seeing a punk band play in a dangerous warehouse.

The mediums used for this show were acrylic paint, drawing ink, and a selection of fine-line drawing pens, all on archival watercolour paper.

INTRODUCTION BY MAHMOOD FAZAL

Spider was topless in the corridor, a skin-tight web of black ink. It was in a South Melbourne trap house, with an Egyptian on the run from up north and some of his Lebanese hitters cutting coke, where I was haggling to buy a rebirthed AMG. The boys were watching YouTube, “Digits” by Young Thug. Spider dropped to the floor and pumped fifty push-ups. It was our first night out together, scratched into my nerves with the same raw pierce as his corrosive images. Spider caught his breath, his chiseled skull found pause and someone called him a mad cunt. Before we rocked up, Spider tattooed a balaclava on my right arm, with the words “Je suis en guerre contre moi-même,” the philosopher Derrida’s last words; I am at war with myself. As we edged towards sunrise, our friendship began to make sense.
